Personality Part 1:

Mordecai is a simple guy. He’s worked in mediocre professions, but anything for a bit of money. Whilst his situation has warranted him a relatively humble lifestyle, Mordecai is decent in how he goes about his life – or in other words, not a complete ‘bum’. He’s always believed in hard work, but also playing hard. He enjoys things as they come to him in his life, more of a guy to go with the flow, preferring less structure in how his life goes. Though, he is not flighty – promising himself never to be for other reasons which will be later mentioned. Mordecai seems to be one face, but the man who is more quiet than boisterous, has more to his persona than just the relaxed demeanour. He isn’t really one for conversation, unless he finds interest or can relate to the other person. He usually ends up being lonesome, only because he finds no need to talk to others who are not worth his time in the sense he cannot relate to them.

For a quiet guy, more placid than fiery, Morde can display great acts of valour. His courage, has been a feature in his life since he was a young boy, all through high school, till now. Having had various jobs and a less than decent homelife, Morde has learn of independence and has had to face the challenges of that. Furthermore, whilst he may not express his feelings or articulate them, Mordecai’s empathy is very strong, a force in him that grounds him to others and thus, people tend to gravitate towards him for support. With this empathy, Morde is able to do courageous things. He has a lot of belief in people, and especially those he cares for – his faith is beyond strong.

As previously mentioned, his spirit and resilience is astounding, which renders him a grounding force for those he knows, a beacon of support and fortitude and reliance. However, Mordecai is a man who tends to speak in deeper messages, giving the impression that he is sort of out of it (no, he is not always high or on weed.) This can be troublesome for himself, as he finds it hard to come to terms with most people in general. As a result, he tends not to branch out unless there is a very good reason.

Mordecai is a good guy who is often depicted as sad or ‘blue’ – with a generous heart, always willing to help others.

But like everyone, he has certainly got his darker side; which manifests in his Kelpie form, cannibalism and killing. Whilst Mord recalls murdering or eating somebody, he has control over his hunger, and seems to be fine with it.

What did your family do to earn a living?

“Dad was a Mariner and a Midshipman (Officer in training), Mum was an Embroiderer and Dyer”

“Socioeconomic class would be low. Compared to the average family, we were below but in a small town you don’t need much. Dad used to talk about being rich, and having luck. He was older than most men, already had a greying beard. He used to go on explorations, to unknown places, he told me. Makes me wonder how long my old man was alive for, ‘cos it sure didn’t sound like he was born in modern times.”

What was your family’s reputation?

“Mum was always called a slut, ‘specially when I went off to school. People always used to say ‘your mum, the slut.’ So I guess that was her reputation.”

“Dad was a bit different. He was renowned in his field, so people liked him. I didn’t know he was my dad until I was 10 years old, and then he left anyway. I don’t know much about him.”

Any family myths, curses or legends?

“Err.. No, not exactly. Except I’m a Kelpie.”

Did any members have a mental illness?

“Alcoholism? My mum had that issue for a while after dad left. Even when dad was around, she stayed inside the house most days whilst he went out all day pretty much. She looked after us, and I’ll admit she did a good job before he broke her heart.”

Were you raised by someone other than your biological parents?

“I used to spend a lot of time with the old lady down the street helping her. I didn’t like her much, until after the age of 10. That’s when I really began to find focus in my life, away from home. Then she passed and we held a big funeral for her.”

Do you know about your extended family and your relationship with them?
“I’ve never met my extended family. Where I lived was very isolated and that’s about it.”

Professions and Crafts:

What level did you achieve apprenticeship or any form of job?

“I’ve worked the odd-job here and there. My dad was very good with his hands, building and crafting things. My mum was good with hers too, and used to do a lot of cooking as well. I’ve learnt to cook from her, and have learnt to ‘fix’ the odd thing whenever its needed from my dad. I did some carpeting for a while, but that’s what you do when you live in wooden houses. That, and gardening and farming so I’d have to say being a country guy that that’s down my alley. I used to take kids for lessons for horse riding, and told them stories. But I suppose that’s not an apprenticeship… -chuckles- I’ve never had a need for them, not even now.”

Personal Events

History: Part One – Childhood

What are your memories of childhood, both good and bad?

“I grew up in a very small town, in the middle of whoop-whoop… -laughs a bit- what we Australians call our rural areas. Y’see, in Australia we have country, outback and then whoop-whoop. And I s’ppose it wasn’t exactly whoop-whoop but there was about four shops as our town centre and about 5 families living in town. Eumarella was our street. There was Eumarella, Westin and Cook street. Eumarella is an aborigine’s word. The rest of the place was a place of dried, true blue grass. Dungabar was the name. Dad, Mum (Vanessa), Mord, Nat, Hugo and Jo. That was us. Peas in a pod.”

“A good memory of mine was when Nat was born. I was so proud to have a younger sister. Always wanted siblings. Dad and Mum were happy then. She was born when I was four years, and had brown hair like mum, wavy and short. Dad had dirt blonde hair, that’s what I’ve inherited. Mum said I always looked more like him. Hugo was then born then, and then Jo – though Jo’s not the kid of Mum. That’s Dan’s kid, and we never liked Dan, not even Jo.”

“So I guess this led to a bad memory – Dan was a bastard of a man. He used mum like a packet of cigs and that’s when her drinking problem started up. Dad left mum, and we’re dirt poor really. Shillings. Our backward town still used shillings and we were still stuck in that time.”

What exactly did Dan do?

“-sighs uncomfortably- Just what a crappy step-father does. Just is in the way, y’know. Blames others. Gets pissed on drinking. Y’know, I was so desperate to bond with him, to make mum happy (‘Cause we always argued and I punched him once) that I guess vice took the better of me and he’d slip me pot, weed. We used to smoke joint together.”

We heard that you had a traumatic childhood…

“Traumatic, yeah. It wasn’t too bad, I had school and work and the siblings to keep my mind off Vanessa and Dan. Well, school wasn’t easy either. Age of 11, Dad left mum to sail to Greece, or was it 10? Dunno. Anyway, never came back. Dan came in the picture. I was already bullied by this kid called Stephen at school. If y’got on his bad side, he ran at ya like a charging bull, right into y’stomach. And I was always tall, but when you’re a kid, that don’t matter. You got peer-pressure – that’s the worse. Mobs of people. So one day, I was blamed for throwing Stephen’s ball over the fence. Everyone liked him. I was dobbed in, and later that day, he lined me up against the brick. He said to me: Don’t come this way again or I’ll kill your mother, the slut. And then you. God, and his parents, it was just a sad family. So then he charged at me like a bull, but I moved to the side, and CRACK! He snapped his own stupid neck.  I was blamed for murder since then.”

Did that ever clear up?

“No, not exactly. People blamed me. So I just went away. Some place else.”

What kind of education did you have?

“-laughs- A pretty crap one.”

Did you ever fall in love or have a serious relationship?

“There was this one girl at school. I think I loved her. Her name was Jessica, but she was involved in some shady witch shit. I didn’t believe the townsfolk, so I went to see. Yeah, she was a witch alright, and you know what she turned me into? A bloody Kelpie.”

Did any consequences occur after that?

“Yup. Plenty. First I didn’t want to go to school or home. So I stayed out in a ditch for a night. It got me this symbol on my forehead. Then, when I got back to Dungabar, people were talking of Jessica gone missing. So I went off to find her. Mainly ‘cause I wanted to be turned back into a human. And if you know anything ‘bout mythology, then she had my bridle.”

“I got it back eventually, I got it from her. She vanished though, from existence it seemed. I never owed up my feelings for her.”

History Part 2: Adolescence

What was school like?

“Same old, same old. Classes were average – I tended to focus in those I only liked. I didn’t talk to the teacher’s much, but I knew that we got along fine. Though my form room teacher hated my guts. She always picked favourites, and that was Stephen. I used to wish everyone liked me. But I realised it wasn’t worth it – did not stop them from picking on me, though.”

So you did not finish school?

“I was smart. I finished it, and as best I could. During the ages of 13-17 I lived back home. Mum didn’t go out ever again after that incident with Stephen. Dan eventually buggered off. Nat started going out with boys, Hugo was reckless and Jo was only young so Mum looked after her. And I? I just kept to myself, sitting on a rock by the river and just sat there, sometimes reading, or sketching or whatever.”

And what about surfing, when did you start that?

“I started around age 6 or 7. Loved the water, loved the beach. Was like a release for me. I’d get up at 4.30 am to Surf from 5-7 am – just to see the sunrise over the water. It was beautiful, man. And I’d stay around the beach all day, talking to mates – who were usually passer-byers and didn’t know all the crap that the town did know about me.”

When did you learn to drive?

“Dan used to own a ute. I used to drive it, for practise. I never told him that I was going out in it. But I figured at the age of 15, sure why the Hell not? Anyway, out there, kids start driving when they’re 12. Nobody cares. It’s all practise after all.”

What were you like as a teenager?

“Eh… Probably reclusive. I guess I didn’t like talking much. I found no interest in other people – sounds snobby, I know. I was also selfish, but I had to be the man of the house. Mums drinking problem didn’t go away so we just accepted it. Had a laugh. Sometimes I’d drink with her, after putting the kids to bed. I used to dream to, hearing her stories of her own past. Wandering what it was like. I had no direction. Just to do what I did every day.”

So did you ever get sick of your family life?

“Yup. All the time. And eventually, I left, but by accident.”

History Part 3: Young Adulthood

Where did you go after school?

“I went away. I pretended to have qualifications, I even got offered some good jobs based off just my personality and who I was. I never stayed long. Eventually, the coppers found out and they’d come after me, ‘cause I was a fraud and sometimes practising things illegally is well... Against the law because its illegal.  I went from town to town, teaching kids mainly at local schools. One day, I got on an aeroplane after being high or stoned or something. Went out to the Caribbean by accident. They thought I was some famous guy or whatever. Mix-up, right? -grin-”

How do you feel about being a carnivore?

“Aw man. I mean, the fact I was human before – but it was like something altered, yeah. Something inside; its just a natural instinct, but I normally just eat meat, usually a stray cat, or a dog, or a cow… Heh. Sometimes a person, but rarely. I can eat human food too.”
